Tangerine is Loopra's electric sibling, in the spirit of the sequencer music of the seventies. Short patterns of different lengths turn on one clock and keep meeting in new places. Above them a conductor holds a chord for a few bars, moves to a neighbour that keeps notes in common, and now and then travels to another key through a shared chord or a held note. No drums: the accents of the sequences are the rhythm.
- Tempo
- The one clock. Everything follows it: the sequences, the echoes, the recorded MIDI.
- Key and mode
- Where the vine lives. Change them while it plays and it travels there by the gentlest route it can find. Random draws a key, a mode and the four harmony settings, and says what it drew.
- Harmonic richness
- From open fifths and suspended chords, through triads and sevenths, to ninths and elevenths. No chord ever holds a minor ninth or a tritone, so nothing rubs.
- Key changes and Distance
- How many times the key changes (per ten minutes, or in a whole thread), and how far each change goes: relative keys and modal shifts nearby, keys a fifth away, chromatic mediants far away.
- Held bass
- How often the bass keeps the home note under a moving chord (a pedal), when that note fits.
- Evolution
- Every few dozen passes, one sequence changes one detail: a step on or off, a note, an octave, an accent. Never two at once. New sequences can also come by themselves, every 32, 64 or 128 bars.
- Slow change
- Note lengths, echoes, brightness, levels, richness, distance and held bass wander slowly around where you set them, each on its own wave of a few minutes. Sounds change: now and then one layer takes another of its sounds, on a chord change.
- Reverb (dry–wet, room size), Motion
- How much reverb, so how far away the layers stand, how big the rooms are, and how much the filters, note lengths, tuning and levels turn on their own slow loops.
- The strands
- Twelve layers: bass sequence, arpeggio, high motif, pad, bells, low strings (bowed), a counter sequence in dotted eighths against the sixteenths, a long lead with a long echo, a drone on the home note, high strings above the pad, a slow melody that comes back after long rests, and an echo pulse of quarter notes. Each has its sound, its envelope (attack, decay, sustain, release and gate: how long a note is held) and its echo, timed to the tempo. Echoes always fade, however high the repeats are set.
- Layers change
- Now and then one layer rests and another comes in, on a chord change: as many layers as you switched on keep playing, the bass included. Silences come and go, and every layer gets its turn.
- New journey, restart and full screen
- New journey draws a new seed, keeping your harmony, settings and listening timer. The round arrow next to Pause starts again from zero, with a new seed, key, mode and harmony; your layers, sounds and tempo stay. The corner button of the vine (or a double click) shows it full screen; Esc leaves.
- Headphones · solo
- Listen to one layer alone, even one that is switched off. Click the same headphones again to return to your mix.
- Keep & Record
- Recover a recent passage downloads up to the last 20 minutes, as sound and notes. The local download records audio directly to the Recordings folder until you stop, in consecutive one-hour WAV files. Recording another Chrome tab captures its audio only; no MIDI or video is saved.
- MIDI out
- Plays the notes live on another app or synthesizer. With "MIDI only", Tangerine becomes a silent sequencer.
All sound is synthesized here. No account, samples, downloads or tracking. The same seed and settings always give the same vine.
